Preparing for the Printrbot with Tinkercad

Waiting for the Printrbot is just killing me, but it is actually proving to be a bit of a blessing, since I have time to actually learn about 3D modeling. I hear this is helpful to know when 3D printing stuff. While I have a whole bunch of software at home I am playing with, my current favorite is Tinkercad.com. All I need is a webGL enabled browser, and bam! I am making 3D models online. It is a lot of fun, and I think that the limitations may actually help teach how to create simpler solutions for complex shapes. Check out some of my prototype bodies for le Derpy! The size is not to scale yet, but I am more focused on trying to see different ways to fit the parts together, and of course trying to make it nice looking. Once I get these digital calipers I ordered, I should be able to make things a lot closer to real measurements. Click on either if you want to check em out in Tinkercad!

Coming Soon: A New Domain, a New Build

Holy crap! It has been a long time since I posted. I have been sort of all over the place with my Arduino stuff lately so I think it is about time for a bit of a recap to get me back on track with the old robot blog! More after the break! Read More »

As promised, here is a video I put together where you can watch the latest ‘bot prance about in all it’s goofy glory!

The Spideruino’s Controller

One of the hardest things for me to wrap my mind around in building the Spideruino was the way XBee worked. It was actually way too simple, and I wasted a long time trying all this complicated stuff to get it to send and receive data. I have put together a little post for anyone else trying to use the Joystick Shield with XBee.

Spideruino Revision – The Derpbot Body

Hello! Today I have some pictures to show you the latest version of my little robot. As fun as the funky face was, it was pretty hideous, and actually just for fun. Read More »

Funky Face

Just a fun Friday post for y’all! I was experimenting with making a temporary enclosure out of foam core, and here is my masterpiece! Heh well, maybe not quite, but I like that is actually has a bit of personality. Not very balanced though.. he kinda wobbles around like a drunken robot.

funny_hexbug_face

I have a big, hilarious plan for him which is still secret for now, but let’s just say the Spiduino is getting a really nifty and mischievous ability in the next few days, involving IR transmission. I think you guys will really like it! I am expecting some really awesome material to arrive next week which will allow me to sculpt the body by hand, IN PLASTIC! Man, I love technology.

Current Build Page Updated

Just a quick note, to let you know that the current build page has been updated. It has some pics of the robot, plus a full parts list and the code for the controller and the bot!

If you have ever wondered how to make a simple Remote control with XBee, it’s your lucky day – I have what I think is a pretty easy way to do it. I am working on a post to explain it in detail, but in the meanwhile, maybe have a look at the code!

Cheers!

Big Update! New Features & A New Name.

It has been so long since I wrote an update on my little robot! That is not to say that I have not been working on it – I have been putting in a bit of time each week, which has been fun (and of course frustrating at times!). My focus has been designing a chassis(learning how to sculpt these weird materials), and trying to figure out how to get the XBees to do my bidding. I am happy to announce that I have sorted a lot out, and I have a new revision of the robot to show you! Yay! More detail after the break!
